I've decided to keep Jewelry confined to the Accessories folder (for the time being) and Shoes & Boots can go into clothing. If we get alot of deviations in those folders, then we'll see if it warrants an expansion.
Happy Holidays and an Update!I'd been planning to move the rulebook to it's own journal post for some time (just because it's easier to edit when needed), so from now on, you can access the group's rules via this document. The welcome/intro section of the page has been updated to include it.
For good measure, you can also copy & paste this URL into your browser.
Regardless of the holiday you and your family are celebrating this season, please have a safe and happy one. If you plan on going out for your local New Year's festivities, please drink responsibly (if you're old enough to partake in such things) and have a designated driver or other backup plan in place.
Happy Holidays from West-Side MMD!
WEST SIDE MMD RULEBOOKCurrent as of December 27th, 2015
Welcome to West-Side MMD! A community for people who like to make their own models and accessories for MikuMikuDance. We accept all skill levels, so long as you've got at least one original model or accessory on display in your gallery. WIPs are also accepted, as are properly credited collaborations (ie: One person does bones, another does expressions or physics, etc.) Just about anyone can make an edit, recolour, mix-and-match various parts, or rip something from a game, but it takes alot of hard work and much love to be able to create something on your own.
Please be advised that this document is subject to updates from time to time, but we will always notify the members!

These are the terms that govern submissions to the group. It should be noted that a couple of rules have been condensed from the previous vers
Regarding CollaborationsRecently we've been seeing more model of the month entries as submissions to the group. Given that many of these models use multiple parts from different sources, my co-founder and I feel that there needs to be some clarification in the rules to avoid confusion.
Currently, rule #5 states that deviations featuring edits of existing models (such as taking pre-made parts from other models like Kio, Nakao or LAT) will not be accepted, and rule #6 says no game rips (or things stolen from the 3D warehouse). This will not change. However, due to the recent number of models featuring multiple parts from multiple sources, the rules for collaborations still need to be defined...
Rule #8 already permits modeling parts that are intended to fit an existing model, so long as you specify that the part was intended for a base, and which base it is/who made it (ie: accessories or alternate outfits for another model). I'm seeing that lots of people already do this so that's
Summer is Here!We at West-Side MMD would like to wish you guys a safe and happy summer vacation (unless you're doing a summer course like me, in which case you cray cray) and Happy Canada Day/Independence Day to those in the US and Canada! No doubt the fireworks have been going on all week even if the big day doesn't start until tomorrow!
EDIT: While I have your attention, I've created a new folder for help and requests. You can submit screenshots there if you're having a problem with something. I've noticed more and more groups are using these sorts of folder systems. Just please note: This group is geared more towards modeling and texturing than animation and posing. That may or may not have an effect on response time, so please be patient. Also, should someone fulfil your request, could you please mark it as solved somehow? It just makes things easier on everybody. Thanks!
Warning about suspicious activity in MLP groupsThis journal has been circulating lately but due to the nature of the story I thought it might be a good idea to share with our group members. I don't know how many of our members are actively involved in the MLP groups here on DA but if you are, this warning is for you.
There've been incidents of a user joining MLP groups as a mod/admin to mess with the settings and in some cases, delete content by the folder. It also looks as if they may be creating new accounts, this person has been keeping tabs on them and their 'name changes' in their journal.
We're not a dedicated MLP group but if any of our members either belong to an existing MLP group or own their own, please talk to your admin/mods and make sure they're aware of the situation and if you are one (a mod or admin) please please consider disabling auto join on your group, as that's what this person uses to get in and make a mes
Approaching the 50 member markIt's come to my attention that the group is starting to grow more rapidly, so I think we'll probably need more staff soon. I just don't want it to become me going away for weeks on end while someone else tries to manage the whole group for me by themselves. I've been in a situation where I was the one trying to handle someone else's duties and it can be a bit of a chore, especially on short notice. And that was just for a forumwide game of Werewolf.
Also, I've awarded the-horrible-mu a promotion to Co-Founder for when I'm busy with school stuff and can't be around as much. Although I still plan to check in periodically to make sure things are running smoothly. Like I said, I don't want to be the one that swaps someone else with my own responsibilities.
If you or someone you know is looking for a staff position though, here's what we're looking for:
Relatively active within the group, and (preferably) has submitted quite a few deviations
Can check back now and again to monitor su
Gallery PermissionsThere was an issue where certain folders had restricted permissions (mostly the newer ones), this has been resolved. Also, I've 'promoted' a couple of the group's top contributors to well... contributor rank (congrats on your good work guys). Permissions aren't too different right now, but they may well be in the future when we have more members. The biggest difference is that contributors are auto approved on gallery submissions. This is because I've seen that you've been following the rules and I trust you guys in my omnipresence. Keep up the good work ok?
I've also extended the 'voting' period on submissions to 1 month since I'm pretty busy with college (animation no less). I noticed that if I leave it at one week, a few of your submissions (while legitimate), expire and I either have to send them again or you guys have to submit them again, or people might be thinking they've violated the rules or something. I just don't want to have people missing out on my account.
New Collections folder!I've noticed that some of our recent submissions have a little bit of everything, which is cool but it's sometimes tough for me to figure out where they belong. So if you want to release a big collection (like, 5-10 or more) of assorted items I've made a folder for assortments of things
If you've got mostly accessories and a couple of unrelated items I don't mind if you put it in the folder that goes with the majority of stuff in the pack, but if you've got a mishmash of hair, clothes, shoes and accessories then you might want to consider submitting it to the assorted folder.
Just a quick updateI'm reposting this since it accidentally went to my own journal the last time.
Anyway, still catching up on a few of the submissions from during my first animation semester, so please bear with me as I try to get back on track. If you submitted anything between late October and early December, you're welcome to try again (or I'll just go back into my list and re-submit the requests myself) if it meets the group submission standards.
And while I'm on the subject, I'll be posting an update to the group rules & guidelines soon. It's occurred to me that I can say all that in fewer words, so it makes more sense. And for the sake of being redundantly convenient, I'll even put up a PDF version for download somewhere...
IDK nobody really reads PDFs, but it feels official so I'm gonna do it anyway

Having an Online Presence"All artists need to have an online presence," I said.
"Easy for you to say, Popular Artist™," they said.
"I had to work hard to get 'popular'," I said
"But it's SOOO hhaaaaAAARD," they said
"That's what I just said," I said.
After making my status posts about making an online presence, I figured I'd make a sort of guide. I made a very generic list of things you should do as an artist who wants to get their name out there or "get popular". A lot of people were like, "but I've done all of that". But chances are, you haven't. There's a lot that goes into this and it takes a long ass time. Don't think it's just gonna happen in a month.
So I made a guide based on my own experience and what worked for me (as an illustrator/artist. Some of these tips are more specific than others and some of these will not necessarily work for you. Everyone's different. Keep in mind this is mostly for illustrators/animators/story artists etc. This won't work fo

365 Day drawing Challenge! So I've decided on doing a 365 day drawing challenge! I've compiled a list of 365 things (adjectives, ideas, verbs, etc.) and I will pick one at random every day. After a year, I will have 365 unique drawings!! I actually started yesterday, and I have to upload the pic. I did #35. If I remember, I will upload every pic I draw.
Update: If you'd like to use this list, please go right ahead and do so! My permission is not necessary, but any comments or credit to me would be greatly appreciated!
Here's my list. I will not be doing them in this order, I'll pick a random one each day. I'm so excited!
1. Draw one of your friends if they were the opposite sex
2. a tragedy
3. Create a new OC and draw their debut
4. a romance
7. draw one of your current OCs as detailed as possible
10. a self portrait
11. an advertisement
12. a collection of stick figures on post it notes (drawn by different friends)

So, I'm making this journal to keep all the adorable plz icons on dA in one spot. If you've got an icon to add in, please comment! Only cute icons, please~! Thank you~!
Tutorials and techniquesQuite a lot of people keep asking me for tutorials and to be honest I see no point in creating yet another strip on how to paint skin/clothes/light/carrots/whatever. There are so many of them out there that it would be simply a waste of time to sit and basically copy what's already been told.
Instead, I've decided to make a compilation of different tutorials and charts that I personally use to learn how to paint.
The most important thing you need to learn even before starting to read a tutorial is that all walk-throughs are meant for you to understand how things work. My point is that after reading and later practicing a tutorial called 'how to paint a glass duck' you should be able to paint not only a glass duck but also anything else made of glass. You should concentrate on understanding the rules and patterns instead of trying to copy what you see on the image. Otherwise you'll end up knowing how to paint only a few things from only one perspective and one lightning pattern.
